Maple Honey Glazed Sweet Potato Rolls

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

These sweet potato rolls are soft, tender, and lightly sweet topped with a delicate maple glaze that adds just the right touch of flavor. There’s nothing better than homemade bread for a Thanksgiving, or holiday meal!

Ingredients in Maple Honey Glazed Sweet Potato Rolls

  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Active Dry Yeast (I use quick rising)
  • Medium sweet potato- cooked and mashed (you want them to be fork tender) – the sweet potato flavor gives it a subtle sweeteness
  • Warm water
  • Honey
  • Unsalted butter – melted
  • Pure maple Syrup – this will combine with melted butter and brushed on top before baking
  • Sugar
  • Salt

Instructions

  • Combine 5 cups of flour and yeast in a large bowl
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer with the dough hook attachment, mix sweet potato puree, sugar, salt, honey, and 1-½ cups warm water at 110 degrees
  • Add 2 cups of flour and with a dough hook, beat at low speed for ½ minute and then 2 minutes at medium-low speed, then add the remaining 3 cups of flour. Mix for 2 minutes until it forms a smooth dough and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. If you’re kneading the dough by hand, it will take about 7 minutes total
  • Form into a smooth dough ball, cover with a towel, and let the dough rise for at least 2 hours  in a warm place.
  • After the first rise, punch down the top of the dough and turn out a lightly floured surface
  • Using a pizza cutter, slice into 12 even triangles
  • Take a piece of each triangle and cut it in half length-wise, then roll each piece of dough into a smooth round ball.
  • Place on a well-greased baking pan or baking dish, cover, and let rest for 10 minutes
  • Whisk melted butter and maple syrup together
  • Bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 6 minutes, and remove from the oven, brushing the butter mixture over the tops of the rolls.
  • Put back in the oven and bake for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown and cool on a wire rack
  • Optional: Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon over top before baking

White vs. Orange Sweet Potatoes

So what’s the difference between white and orange sweet potatoes? Orange sweet potatoes have more moisture, are orange-fleshed, and are very sweet. White sweet potatoes are dryer, white-fleshed, mild in flavor, and slightly nutty. While you can use either one in this recipe, using an orange potato will create a moister texture to the sweet potato dinner rolls.

Storing Leftover Rolls

The best thing about this bread is that it has a longer shelf life than other breads. It will stay fresh for 2 days at room temperature and 3-4 days in an airtight container or plastic wrap in the refrigerator and you can wrap it in aluminum foil and store it in the freezer for up to a month.
