Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Any day is a party with The BEST Peanut Butter Celebration Cookies. These soft and chewy peanut butter cookies are loaded with creamy peanut butter and colorful rainbow sprinkles, making them perfect for birthdays, holidays, bake sales, or just because.

This is one of those tried-and-true cookie recipes you come back to again and again. They bake up fluffy in the center, lightly golden on the edges, and stay irresistibly soft long after they cool.

A Tried and True Family Recipe

This peanut butter cookie recipe was handed down from my mom, and I have the best memories of baking these together as a kid. It’s one of my all-time favorite cookie recipes because it delivers big peanut butter flavor with minimal prep time—no chilling required.

If you’re looking for a dependable cookie that always gets rave reviews, this one never disappoints.

Ingredients for Peanut Butter Celebration Cookies

  • All-Purpose Flour – To make them gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour
  • Baking Soda – Key for light, fluffy cookies (don’t substitute baking powder)
  • Salt – Enhances and balances the sweetness
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Brown Sugar – Light or dark both work
  • Unsalted Butter – Salted butter can overpower the sweetness
  • Peanut Butter – “Choosing the right peanut butter matters—this is why I recommend creamy peanut butter in my classic peanut butter cookie recipe.”
  • Egg (Room Temperature) – Helps create a softer cookie
  • Milk – Dairy or plant-based both work
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Rainbow Sprinkles – Naturally colored sprinkles work beautifully

How to Make Peanut Butter Celebration Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease or line baking sheets.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy (2–3 minutes).
  4. Add egg, milk, and vanilla. Mix until fully combined.
  5. Add dry ingredients and mix on low just until a dough forms.
  6. Gently fold in sprinkles—do not overmix.
  7. Scoop dough into balls and place on baking sheet. Lightly press each ball down.
  8. Bake for 9–11 minutes, removing cookies when centers look slightly underbaked.
  9. Cool on baking sheet briefly, then transfer to a wire rack.

Tip: Skip the traditional fork criss-cross. Leaving the dough thicker helps these cookies stay soft and fluffy.

Why Did My Peanut Butter Cookies Turn Out Hard?

The most common reason peanut butter cookies turn out hard is overbaking. Cookies continue to firm up as they cool, so pulling them from the oven early is key. Another issue is not creaming the butter and sugars long enough, which prevents proper aeration.

How Do You Fix Hard Peanut Butter Cookies?

  • Place a slice of bread in the cookie container for 24 hours to restore moisture
  • Wrap a cookie in a damp paper towel and microwave for 15–20 seconds

What’s the Secret to Soft & Chewy Peanut Butter Cookies?

  • Slightly underbake the cookies
  • Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy
  • Bake at a slightly higher temperature for a shorter time
  • Roll dough balls taller rather than wide

Storage & Freezing Instructions

  • Room Temperature: Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 4 days
  • Freezer (Baked): Freeze cookies for up to 3 months
  • Freezer (Dough): Freeze cookie dough balls up to 4 months, layered with parchment paper
