These 3 Ingredient Frozen Banana Bites are made from 3 simple ingredients: bananas, peanut butter (or Nutella) and chocolate chips. They’re super simple to prepare but the flavor combination paired with the frozen consistency proves that sometimes…less is more!
DIY Double Boiler
In this recipe, I’ve included the directions to microwave the chocolate. Microwaving the chocolate keeps the preparation super simple, but when I’m making a large batch I prefer a do-it-yourself double boiler. The double boiler keeps the chocolate warm while you work so there’s no pressure to finish quickly to prevent the banana/nut butter slices from warming up and falling apart as you coat them in chocolate. If you use the double boiler, simply remove only a few banana slices from the freezer at a time (instead of the entire baking sheet) and work at your own pace.
There’s no need to purchase a double boiler as the DIY version works just fine! You’ll simply heat a few inches of water in a pan. There’s no need to bring the water to a boil, but you do want to make sure it’s hot. Place a heat resistant glass or metal bowl into the pan with the water and place your chocolate in the bowl and stir while the chocolate melts.
Limitless Variations
Here’s the fun part. I’ve included the recipe for basic 3 Ingredient Frozen Banana Bites, but each member of my family has their favorite variation so have some fun experimenting with these frozen treats. I use toppings to indicate which bite is which so that each family member knows exactly what they’re getting. Here are a few variations that we’ve tried, so use this as a starting point and if you find a good one, please share your recipe in the comments!
- Chocolate + banana + peanut butter + any flavor jelly or jam. I find that it’s best to sandwich the jam in between the banana and the peanut butter so it doesn’t slip out when it’s rolled in the chocolate.
- Chocolate + banana + peanut butter + honey or hot (spicy) honey. Honey and peanut butter is a classic flavor combo! If you’re feeling brave and want to try a slightly spicy honey, you can usually find one already prepared at your local grocery store or Trader Joes. If you can’t find one, simply add a little red pepper flakes to your honey. Add it little by little, taste testing along the way to give these bites a unique kick.
- Chocolate + banana + nutella + 1/2 Maraschino cherry. Sandwich the Maraschino cherry in between the banana and Nutella so it stays in place while you roll it in chocolate.
- Mix up the chocolate! Dark, semi sweet and milk chocolate all make delicious 3 Ingredient Frozen Banana Bites. Try drizzling a little white chocolate on these frozen treats.
- Extra Banana – If you prefer a higher ratio of banana to chocolate, sandwich the nut butter in between two slices of banana before you roll them in chocolate. This creates a super sized banana bite!
- Fun Toppings – Try different types of nuts – peanuts and almonds are my favorite. You could even crush your favorite candy bar and sprinkle the pieces on top or try crushed pretzels for a sweet and salty variation.

3 Ingredient Frozen Banana Bites
Ingredients
- 3 ripe bananas
- ½ cup Nutella or peanut butter
- 12 oz bag of chocolate chips semi sweet, milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips
- Crushed nuts or sprinkles for topping optional
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Make sure that you use a baking sheet that will fit into your freezer.
- Slice the bananas into 1/4 inch pieces and spread them out on the parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
- Use a small spoon or a teaspoon to drop just enough Nutella or peanut butter to cover the top of the slice (about 1-2 teaspoons per slice).
- Once all banana rounds are topped with Nutella or peanut butter, place the baking sheet into the freezer for at least one hour.
- Melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl until completely melted. Check on the chocolate and stir every 30 seconds. All microwaves heat differently so be sure to check on it every 30 seconds but this process usually takes about 2 minutes.
- Remove the melted chocolate from the microwave and prepare to work quickly because as the bananas warm up, they become difficult to coat in chocolate without falling apart and eventually the chocolate will begin to harden again. Feel free to use a double boiler if you'd prefer to work at your own pace.
- Use two forks to roll each banana/nut butter slice in the chocolate until it's fully coated. Place the bite back onto the parchment paper and top each bite with sprinkles and/or crushed nuts before it dries to ensure the topping stays in place.
- Place the baking sheet with the bites back into the freezer. Freeze for at least two hours before serving.
- Store in a Ziploc bag or airtight container in the freezer.

3 ingredients, and no complicated steps – thank you for giving so many easy options for non cooks 🙂
