These white chocolate-covered gluten free Oreo eyeballs are decorated as creepy bloodshot eyeballs. Who doesn’t love a disgusting, spooky Halloween treat that tastes anything but? Gluten free Oreo Eyeballs are so easy to prepare even my 5-year old joined in on the fun. These cookies can be assembled in just about 30 minutes which makes them perfect for classroom parties, Halloween party treats or a fun way to cook with young kids.
Chocolate chips or candy melts?
I’ve made these gluten free Oreo eyeballs using chocolate chips and candy melts. Candy melts are made of ingredients specifically made to melt so they’re easier to work with. The texture is also creamier. Chocolate chips, on the other hand, can have a bit of a grainy texture once they’re melted. That said, the major benefit is that I can buy them at the grocery store so i don’t have to make a special trip to a craft store. For this reason, I usually use good old chocolate chips when I make this recipe but, either one will do the trick!
Do-it-yourself Double Boiler
To melt the white chocolate, you can pour the chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl and pop it into the microwave for 30 second intervals until it’s melted, or you can use a simple DIY double boiler. There’s no need to purchase a double boiler device as the DIY version works just fine! A double boiler is used for heat-sensitive ingredients like chocolate. You’ll simply heat a few inches of water in a pan. There’s no need to bring the water to a boil, but you do want to make sure it’s hot. Place a heat resistant glass or metal bowl into the pan with the water and place your chocolate in the bowl and stir while the chocolate melts. Make sure the water doesn’t get into the bowl as that will ruin the consistency of the chocolate.
I prefer to use a double-boiler and turn the heat low so that I can take my time while assembling these cookies without having to worry about the chocolate cooling and hardening.
What’s in Gluten Free Oreo Eyeballs?
- White chocolate chips or white chocolate candy melts
- Chocolate or golden gluten free Oreo cookies
- Peanut or almond M&Ms – It’s important to note that Peanut, almond and plain m&m’s do not contain gluten however they are not labeled as gluten free due to the potential for cross contamination on shared equipment. I have a non-celiac gluten sensitivity so I haven’t had any issues eating m&m’s but this could potentially cause a problem for celiacs.
- Chocolate chips or plain brown M&Ms
- Tube of red decorating icing – This can typically be found in the cake decorating and candle section of the grocery store.

- Dip the Oreos into the chocolate and roll them around until they’re fulled coated. Use a fork to remove the oreo and allow any excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl.
- Place the Oreo on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and place a peanut or almond m&m in the center and allow it to cool. Repeat this process until all 24 Oreos are coated and cooling.

- Squeeze a tiny amount of icing in the center of the peanut or almond m&m and place one chocolate chip or brown regular M&M in the center to create the pupils.
