30 Minute Tofu Lettuce Wraps

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

A quick and heathy weeknight meal

Crumbled tofu, sliced green onions and fresh mushrooms are sautéed with a simple homemade Asian sauce. This healthy and delicious tofu mixture is wrapped in a crispy piece of lettuce for the crunch factor that makes this dish one of my family’s favorites! My 30 Minute Tofu Lettuce Wraps require only 7 ingredients and take just 30 minutes to prepare but sometimes less is more. Less ingredients, less cooking, less mess…SO much flavor!

Toppings…the choice is yours

My recipe for 30 Minute Tofu Lettuce Wraps is excellent on its own but feel free to experiment with toppings for additional flavor, crunch and added nutrients. I always have shredded carrots in my fridge so I add a few on top of each wrap along with a fresh herb. My favorite herb to add to these wraps is mint because I really enjoy the soy sauce/mint combination, but cilantro or basil are also excellent in this recipe.

Living Lettuce

These 30 Minute Tofu Lettuce wraps can be wrapped in any type of lettuce leaf large enough to hold about 1/4- 1/2 cup of the mixture and toppings, but my favorite is Living Butter Lettuce. Living Lettuce is harvested with its roots in tact for maximum freshness so when you’re ready to eat it, it tastes like it was just picked from the garden! It usually comes in a plastic container that I store in the fridge (towards the front so it doesn’t get too cold), and I add about 1/2 tablespoon of water to the roots every few days to keep the plant alive and tasting fresh until I’m ready to use it. Prefer stir-fry over lettuce wraps? No problem…skip the lettuce wrap and add this delicious tofu mixture to a plate of rice.

What’s in 30 Minute Tofu Lettuce Wraps?

  • 14 ounces extra firm tofu – Patted dry with a paper towel or kitchen towel
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce – To make this recipe gluten free, you can substitute the soy sauce for Tamari sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup sliced green onions
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • 1 Head butter lettuce – I prefer living butter lettuce for these wraps because it stays fresh longer and tastes like it was just picked from the garden!
  • Shredded Carrots (optional)
  • Fresh herbs such as cilantro, basil, or mint (optional)

How to make 30 Minute Tofu Lettuce Wraps

  • Mix the soy sauce or Tamari sauce and the maple syrup in a small bowl with a whisk.
  • Remove tofu from the fluid it’s stored in and pat it dry with a paper towel or kitchen towel. Crumble the tofu by adding the dried block to a large bowl and use a fork or a potato masher to break the block into crumbles.
  • Heat the oil in a nonstick skillet on medium heat and add the crumbled tofu.
  • Cook the tofu for about 10 minutes, stirring every 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the sliced green onions and sliced mushrooms to the tofu mixture and cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Add the soy sauce/maple syrup mixture and cook another 3-5 minutes.
  • Assemble the lettuce wrap by placing about 1/4 cup – 1/2 cup tofu mixture into one piece of lettuce and top with shredded carrots (optional) and fresh herbs (optional).
These 30 Minute Tofu Lettuce Wraps can be served with a variety of toppings for different flavor variations.
